Privacy Policy

Weatherloom is an independent Android weather app and home-screen widget. It is designed to provide local weather while keeping personal data collection to a minimum.

The short version

Weatherloom has no account system, advertising SDK, or analytics SDK. Optional current-location access—including precise location when the user allows it—is used only to provide location-based weather. Weather and settings are cached on the device, and Google Play handles the optional supporter purchase.

Optional current and precise location

Current-location access is optional. Weatherloom requests it only when the user enables location-based weather, such as a widget set to Follow me. Android lets the user provide an approximate location or optionally enable precise location. Precise location can improve selection of the nearest NOAA forecast point and observation station, but it is not required; Weatherloom can use approximate location or manually saved locations. A current location may be requested during setup, manual refreshes, and scheduled weather updates for widgets configured to follow the device.

If background location is enabled, Weatherloom may update the location while the app is not visible so follow-me weather and optional alert monitoring can remain relevant. Location access can be changed at any time in Android Settings. Widgets assigned to a manually saved location do not need the device's current location for their weather.

Weather and radar requests

Weatherloom sends the selected latitude and longitude directly from the device to the United States National Weather Service at api.weather.gov over HTTPS. These requests retrieve local observations, forecasts, hourly forecast data, active weather alerts, and the appropriate NWS radar station. Radar imagery is retrieved from radar.weather.gov.

Weatherloom does not operate an intermediary weather server. NOAA/NWS receives normal network information associated with a request, such as the device's public IP address, and its own terms and privacy practices apply.

Information stored on the device

Weatherloom stores the following in private application storage as needed:

  • Saved locations and the most recently used device location
  • Recent weather, forecast, alert, and radar responses for offline viewing
  • Widget appearance, location, clock, units, and animation settings
  • Alert identifiers used to avoid duplicate notifications
  • The optional supporter entitlement returned by Google Play

This information is excluded from Android cloud backup and device transfer. It can be removed by clearing Weatherloom's app storage or uninstalling the app.

Optional supporter purchase

Weatherloom offers an optional one-time purchase through Google Play. It unlocks only a cosmetic supporter badge; weather, widgets, saved locations, radar, and alerts remain free. Google Play processes and can restore the purchase. Weatherloom does not receive payment-card information and stores only the supporter entitlement returned by Google Play.

Weather-alert notifications

Weather-alert notifications are optional. When enabled, Weatherloom may check for active NWS alerts during scheduled updates and stores alert identifiers locally to avoid repeated notifications for the same alert. Notifications can be delayed or prevented by Android background-execution, connectivity, and battery-saving behavior. Weatherloom must not be treated as the user's only source of emergency information.

Sharing, selling, and retention

Weatherloom does not sell personal information. It does not share location or weather usage with advertising or analytics companies. Information is sent only as needed to provide the requested service through NOAA/NWS and Google Play, as described above. Locally cached information remains until it is replaced, app storage is cleared, or the app is uninstalled.

Children's privacy

Weatherloom is a general-audience utility and is not directed to children under 13. The app does not knowingly collect personal information from children.

NOAA/NWS attribution

Weatherloom uses public NOAA and National Weather Service data and is not endorsed by NOAA or NWS. Service coverage is primarily for the United States and its territories.

Policy changes

This policy may be updated when Weatherloom's features or data practices change. The effective date at the top of this page will identify the latest revision.
